Serving as a Lector or Jr. Lector at Mass is an important responsibility. You are entrusted with the crucial role of making the Word of God come alive. With your voice and appearance you lift up the people in the congregation. You project your voice so that all words are clearly heard and easily understood.

Order of the Liturgy for Lectors

 

  1. Presiding priest gives signal to Lector One to begin Greeting
  2. Lector Two, carrying the Book of Gospels, processes behind Altar Servers, continues to altar without stopping, places the Book on the altar, and is seated *
  3. Priest’s greeting and Penitential Rite (I confess to Almighty God…)
  4. Gloria (sung or spoken prayer)
  5. Priest reads Opening Prayer and is seated. Wait for him to be seated, then
  6. Lector One goes to ambo for First Reading
  7. Responsorial Psalm. Wait for him or her to be seated, then
  8. Lector Two goes to ambo for Second Reading
  9. Gospel Reading, Homily, Profession of Faith. Lector Two should step up to the ambo at “We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church… *
  10. Priest reads short introduction to General Intercessions, then Lector Two reads General Intercessions (Prayer of the Faithful)*
  11. Lector Two remains at ambo while priest adds a prayer.  Wait for congregation to be seated and quiet before reading the Stewardship Thought*
bulletIf the Deacon is present, he will carry the Book of Gospels at the beginning of Mass and will also read the General Intercessions.  Lector Two simply needs to read the Second Reading and the Stewardship Thought.
