Welcome to the St. John
Neumann family. I look forward to your participation as we build a parish
community that makes present the Kingdom of God among us.
This is our Parish Ministry
and Resource Directory, which includes a brief history of our Parish as well as
some of the ministries and activities that are offered to help us celebrate
together our gift of faith. For information, please call on those listed in the
Parish Ministry Contacts at the end of this directory, or call the Church
Office (704) 536-6520.
The people of St. John
Neumann are committed to stewardship, the giving of ourselves through our time,
talent and treasure. I ask you to prayerfully consider how you can help support
the Parish. Please consider getting involved and truly becoming an active
member of our family. Our needs are
many, and it is essential that all consider how the abilities God has given us
can contribute to the life of the parish and to the wider community of faith
here in Southeast Charlotte.
It is my hope that we will
continue to develop a family spirit in the midst of our growing numbers. Please
be assured that we will do all that we can to respond to you, as we work
together to find new and creative ways to celebrate our faith. Please know that my door is always open, and
I am always interested in hearing your ideas and concerns.
I hope that you will use your
church offering envelopes on a regular basis so that you can share your
treasure for the work of the Church. It is your weekly contributions that allow
us to continue to offer quality programs, especially for our children, and to
develop new ways to respond to the ongoing needs of our growing Parish.
May the Lord continue to
bless and keep you.
Devotedly Yours In Christ,
Father Patrick Hoare

a threefold ministry of: proclaiming and teaching the Word to give
understanding, building community on the foundation of the Word, and serving
the educational needs of all. |

© Stewardship
is living a life of gratitude to God for His blessings by giving back. It is using
our time, talent, and treasure to help do God’s work on Earth. We do that by
participating in the activities of the Church.
Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old
Testament and the teachings of Jesus. By practicing these principles, we deepen
our relationship with the Lord. Where stewardship is implemented, the lives of
both the givers and the receivers are changed.
Stewardship is a way of life. It is a way
of thanking God for all of His blessings by returning to Him a portion of the
time, talent, and financial resources given to us. It is based on the individual’s need
to give, not on the Church’s need to receive.
©©©©©©©©
The faith
community at St. John Neumann Church is encouraged to embrace a life-style of
Christian Stewardship. We have all been blessed with gifts. We invite you to
share your gifts by reaching out to your family, your church and your
community.
The following
pages list St. John Neumann’s activities, ministries and organizations. Each
group is organized alphabetically under the respective Commission.
©©©©©©©©
Volunteers
are needed for a short period of time to participate in planning and presenting
the annual Ministry Fair. This is an opportunity for parish members to
see what activities St. John Neumann has to offer so individuals
can prayerfully discern and make an informed decision regarding
participation in SJN's ministries.
Boys
and girls who are in 3rd grade or older and have received the
Sacrament of First Holy Communion are invited to become Altar Servers, a
ministry of assisting/serving at weekend Masses and other liturgical functions.
Training is provided.
Parents
and expectant parents who wish to have their children baptized in the Catholic
faith must attend the Baptismal Preparation Class, held at the Church on the 3rd
Sunday of every month at 1:30 PM. Please call the Parish Office to schedule the
class you wish to attend. You must call the office to schedule the Baptism
after taking the class.
The
Children’s Liturgy Mass is a special mass geared toward the younger children of
the parish where the Gospel is portrayed in action on a child’s level by the
St. John Neumann Players. The Children’s Choir leads the music for these
special liturgies which are scheduled every two months. See the weekly church
bulletin for the schedule.

parish community. Training is provided on an individual basis and at an annual

The
Ushers are responsible for providing assistance as needed to the congregation
before and during Mass helping with the weekly offering collections, and during
Holy Communion.

congregation in song during Mass.
Instrumentalists are musicians who are proficient on the

Sick or Communion. Otherwise, we will not know of your need.
The
Nursery Co-op is a program designed and run by parents of the St. John Neumann
community. It allows adults to enjoy and worship each Sunday, during the 10 AM
Mass, while knowing their children, from infant to 2 years old, are in a safe,
loving, Christian environment. Parents of those children registered within the
Co-op work on a rotating schedule. 3 and 4 Year old Co-Ops operate during
the Religious Education year when a volunteer coordinator is in place.
SJN’s
weekly bulletin is printed and distributed after all Masses. Submissions
for announcements are handled through the Parish Office.
Submissions for the following Sunday's bulletin are due to the Parish
Office by 4 PM on Friday (9 days prior) by e-mailing bulletin@4sjnc.org or by a hardcopy or fax. (Announcements around
holidays should be submitted two weeks prior to the intended publish
date.)
Calendar, Room Reservations & Facilities
Co-ordination
A
calendar of daily events is updated weekly by the Parish Office and
is available under the “Calendar & Events” page of the Parish
website. This information is also posted at the Welcome Booth in the
Gathering Area. Any SJN ministry can request a meeting time and
space through a "Room Reservation Form" available at
the Parish Office and on the Parish website under the "Calendar &
Events" page. Please remember that all groups needing space in any SJN
parish facilities must submit their requests to the Parish Office in advance.
Bulletin announcements do not automatically reserve a room. Also, please notify
the office of any cancellation of space.
ESL – English as a Second Language
ESL
classes are held on Thursday evenings from September to June. Participants meet
in the Parish Hall at 7:00 PM. Volunteer teachers then take groups of
beginning, intermediate and advanced students to their classrooms. You do not
need to know another language to volunteer.
The
Blessed Statue of Mary is moved to different SJN households each week. Families
can have the Blessed Statue of Mary in their home and can invite family and
friends to gather around the heavenly Mother to pray the Rosary each day.
The
prayer chain is a mode of communication for our parishioners to
let serious needs be known and prayed for. About 30
individuals are contacted by e-mail when a prayer request is made.
Everyone
is invited to a time of prayer, praise, and scripture sharing for specific and
general intentions. Weekly gatherings are Tuesdays at 7:30 PM.
Parishioners
gather to pray the Rosary after the 9:15 AM daily Mass, as well as a special
devotion to our Blessed Mother on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM.
Website Co-ordination
– internet address www.4sjnc.org
The
parish website is communication tool that has existed since October 1999 and
helps keep us tied together "online". Documents and weekly bulletins
in Adobe Acrobat format are available along with links to the outstanding
Children's Liturgy website. Event calendars and Mass schedules for Eucharistic
Ministers, Lectors, & Altar Servers are included as well. Please take
some time to explore this valuable parish resource.
As
a welcoming community of Christians, we reach out to establish communication
with all newly registered parishioners with the objective to facilitate
adapting into the SJN parish. Periodic welcoming receptions are held throughout
the year to foster camaraderie with existing parishioners. Additionally, we
greet parishioners and visitors as they enter the church to attend Mass and
answer questions as needed. Volunteers
are scheduled according to mass preference.
Camp
Care provides a carefree week of fun and activities for children with cancer.
SJN parishioners of all ages participate in various fund-raising activities to
support this worthy cause, including an annual Camp Care Walk.

The
Christmas Stable provides an opportunity to make a Christmas wish come true.
Parishioners purchase gift items, and volunteers sort, wrap and deliver gifts

service work in the community and at St. John Neumann Parish, support the
Knights of Columbus, have social events and participate in athletic
competitions against other chapters in the state. It is open to any young
man in the parish, age 10 to 18. Meetings are held on the 1st Sunday

Parish and community through many activities. Projects include raising money

and 3rd Thursdays of the month at the Columbus Club.
Membership includes men, age 18 and older.

This
organization is open to all women of the Parish (husband does not need to be a
Knight). Activities stem from thoughtful ideas for those in need. Examples
include knitting hats for preemies, making Christmas decorations for nursing
homes and working the Bingo kitchen to raise money for charities.
SJN
volunteers spend one Thursday morning each month preparing and packing donated
items for delivery to those in need. The work is done at the St. Andrews
Episcopal pantry located at 3601 Central Ave. on the first and fifth (if there
is one) Thursday(s) of each month. The hours are from 9:45 AM to 1:00 PM.
The
Men’s Homeless Shelter is a program that provides an evening meal to the
residents of the uptown shelter on the 1st Saturday of every
month. No training is required. Volunteers arrive at 3:00 PM and leave by
6:00 PM.
SNJ
families support this international giving event by filling shoeboxes with
gifts for children overseas. Teen and adult volunteers help to sort and prepare
the gifts for shipment throughout the world.
This
multigenerational group meets on Wednesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, to quilt
for personal needs and service projects. Experienced quilters help the

ecumenical ministry offers support to persons living with HIV/AIDS.
Participation can range from being a team member that focuses on the many needs
of one patient, to offering an occasional ride to the grocery store. One
training class is required. The group meets every other month.
The
committee members promote awareness and education on Respect Life issues from
birth to death. They also provide literature for the community, sponsor “Life
Chain” each October, encourage “March for Life” participation, and support
local pro-life agencies. This group meets a few times a year. Everyone is
welcome to participate.
This
group makes mission rosaries and sends them around the world. Meetings are held
every other month, but are not mandatory. Training is provided to learn the
craft. Work can be done at home. There are no quotas.
This commission is being
newly developed within the SJN parish. It is a commitment to ecumenism
and interfaith dialogue as integral to its life and ministry. The commission
will promote dialogue with other denominations, faith formation within the
Catholic tradition, and a clear understanding of Catholic doctrine as it
touches the lives of other Christians, Jews, other religions, and
non-believers. It will plan and coordinate efforts to heal divisions
among Christians within the territory of the parish and reaches out to people
of good will who seek one faith, one baptism in Christ Jesus.
The
Maintenance Committee provides ‘handypersons’ the opportunity to volunteer to
be ‘on-call’ (not 24/7, but on personal availability) for help with upkeep,
repairs and upgrades needed to SJN’s buildings and facilities. Volunteers are
encouraged to report repair and replacement needs to the church office and
participate in quarterly work days.
